To provide access to dance education, collective experiences and holistic methods that will preserve traditions while inspiring innovation in the world of South Asian, Indo-Caribbean and contemporary dance forms.
My name is Reshmi Chetram and I am an arts/dance professional with over 18 years of experience performing globally, training dancers, producing arts events and exhibitions. I help bring dance dreams to light with my structured, thorough and intuitive approach to dance education, event design and production management.
I started my journey in the arts at the age of 6 as a young student immersed in my culture learning Kathak, Odissi, Filmy & Indo-Caribbean Folk dance. As many of my young students, dance was a part of my weekly schedule and on the weekends I would perform at cultural events and this was where my deep connection to my roots and heritage took place.
As a young adult, after learning with my mother the late Deviekha Chetram, for many years, I took a leap of faith into my passion to help fellow passionate artists take a step further and build careers in dance. For 7 years I lived in Delhi, India studying Kathak with world renowned guru, Sri Pandit Birju Maharaj. The goal? To serve as a bridge of information for dancers in North America. I served on the board of Natya Arts Productions, producing Rhythm of Ghungroos Festival, Precious Gems showcase, awarded scholarships for Indian classical studies and welcomed esteemed teachers from all around the world to teach in Canada.
In my career, I have taught over 1100 dancers of all ages, levels and backgrounds. I hold space for artists to connect to their passion and come home to themselves through movement and creativity. I understand the importance of immersing ourselves in a passion in this lifetime. It’s not about the logistics - it’s about connecting on a much deeper level to something that keeps us inspired, rooted and liberated in our daily lives.
When I work with creatives, whether it be for 1 month or 10 years, the goal is to ensure they feel connected to their art. It’s not about creating clones, it’s about digging deep to unlock the artist within each client. I’ve absolutely loved my career because of this. Watching artist after artist come through my doors unsure of what to expect and hesitant, yet leaving confident, illuminated and developed in their creative abilities.
